SATURDAY, July 17Never Have I EverProducer Mindy Kaling’s coming-of-age comedy—based partially on her childhood in the Boston area and the death of her father—returns for season two with Maitreyi Ramakrishnan as an Indian American teen faced with more pressures of high school and drama at home (Netflix). The GlobeChef Robert Irving hosts this new competition in which five cuisine masters are transported to majestic “food destinations” around the world (via LED screen backdrops) to prepare that location’s premiere dishes with local ingredients (Discovery+). SUNDAY, July 18The EndDark comedy 10-part series stars Harriett Walter and Frances O’Connor in a tale of a three-generation family with members wrestling with some dimension of the issue on how to die with dignity (8 p.m., Showtime). Jerusalem: City of Faith and FuryActor Ewan McGregor narrates this new six-part series examining one of the most controversial cities in history through six epic conflicts that shaped and defined it over the past 3,000 years (10 p.m., CNN). MONDAY, July 19Shoelaces for ChristmasA bit early for Christmas? Not on for Hallmark, where Christmas flicks seem to be always in season. This one—originally released in 2018—stars former Party of Five and One Life to Live actress Jessica Morris, along with Mia Topalian in a tale about a self-absorbed teen who discovers (you guessed it)—the meaning of Christmas when she volunteers at a homeless shelter (streaming on Hallmark Movies Now). Getaway DriverFast & Furious franchise star Michelle Rodriguez hosts—alongside rally champ Wyatt Knox—this new competition in which elite drivers (from drift champions to hotshot YouTubers) put their skills to the test on a massive 60-acre, obstacle-filled compound (9 p.m., Discovery). TUESDAY, July 20In Their Own Words: Pope FrancisLearn what experiences led Jorge Bergoglio to the highest office in the Catholic Church, using archival footage, photos and his own words. It kicks off this new weekly series about some of the world’s most transformative individuals (8 p.m., PBS). Man Vs. Ultra City SmithsKristen Bell and her husband, Dax Sheppard, plus Ali Shawkat, Tim Meadows, Terry O’Quinn, Debra Winger, Luis Guzmán, John C. Reilly, Bebe Neuwirth and Tom Waits are among the vocal cast for this bonkers stop-motion comedy-crime-thriller series—about a group of baby dolls who function as grownups (AMC+). AT THE MOVIES Why would a group of attractive young people return to a deadly game of do-or-die, where getting out alive depends on their instincts and their will to survive? Maybe because the previous movie about them, made for a paltry $9 million, returned almost 15 times that much in profit. Watch Escape Room: Tournament of Champions to find out how it all goes down. The star power is low-wattage and the title makes it sound kinda grim, but Die in a Gunfight is actually a gangster-centric spin on the timeless Romeo & Juliet themes of romance, revenge and betrayal…and a pair of star-crossed lovers. Alexandria Daddario, who appeared in the Percy Jackson movie series and who had a recurring role on the NBC comedy-drama Parenthood, is the main attraction. Space Jam: A New Legacy—a sequel to the 1996 hit with basketball legend Michael Jordan—features hoops icon LeBron James mixin’ it up on the court with animated Looney Toons superstars Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, Daffy Duck, Elmer Fudd, Tweety Bird and other cartoon characters. NEW ON DVD Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson are on the gruesome trail of a killer whose work reminds them of the city’s grisly past in Spiral (Lionsgate Home Entertainment), the latest installment in the lucrative mystery-horror Saw franchise.
