From a preschool teacher to a drummer in a famous rock band—Limp Bizkit, parents leave their day jobs to strut their stuff with some of the country’s best young dancers—their kids—when Come Dance With Me premieres on CBS. Throughout the season, the teams will learn different dance routines, from hip hop and ballroom to contemporary and theatrical, and will tackle a new dance routine each week in hopes of earning top scores from the judges and continuing in the competition. At the end of every episode, the two lowest-scoring teams will battle each other in a freestyle dance-off, as the judges determine which team will be eliminated and which will advance.

How hard was it for the judges to send the kids home?
Jenna Dewan: “As a mother, you are watching these kids that are giving it their all on the stage with their parents. So, there’s a protective feeling. There’s an investment that happens when you are on this journey with them. So, when we had to get to the judging and the critiques and what we’re looking for when, we had a really strong checklist so to speak of what we were looking for. So, when it came to that, it was difficult at times, because we are dancers. We have to keep it real. We have to be honest with what we’re seeing. But our hearts are in it. So that was a fun and unique challenge we had as judges on this show.” Tricia Miranda: “That was so hard. That was the worst part about it. The worst and best part about it. I think it’s fair that we got to vote as judges because of our experience in the business, so we got to give them really good feedback, positive feedback that helped them grow. But it was really hard because we had to sit next to each other as judges, and I really wanted to know so bad, like, “Okay. What did Jenna score this team? What did Dexter score this team?” And we couldn’t. We weren’t allowed to.

What does Come Dance With Me have in common with NCIS: Los Angeles?
The family dance competition is executive produced by NCIS: Los Angeles stars Chris O’Donnell and LL Cool J.
Where did the idea for Come Dance with Me originate?
“My friend Reinout first brought it to me—because we knew each other through our kids, and he’d been in this reality genre for a long time,” Chris O’Donnell said. “He brought it to me, and I thought, ‘You know? I relate. I get it.’ I’m not a comfortable dancer, but what wouldn’t you do for your kids?" “The genesis of the thing was Chris came to me and showed me this sizzle with this germ of an idea about these kids that could really dance and them getting with family members, maybe just dads, maybe just moms,” LL Cool J said. “And we bounced the idea around, and I immediately gravitated towards it. I thought it was an incredible idea. I thought it was really fun. I thought the energy was right. “This was pre-pandemic when we first got into it. But even at that time, I felt like, ‘You know what? The world could use a nice family show that’s a lot of fun, that people could dance to and enjoy.’ It was a good time. I thought it was a great idea. I thought it was something we could work with and here we are, Come Dance with Me. You know what I’m saying? “The timing was amazing, because when COVID hit and development was still going on, and TikTok hit, all of a sudden we found ourselves sheltering in place at home with our families and doing these little dance videos, watching my oldest daughter teach her little brothers how to do dances, and making bets on who could do it and who couldn’t do it. So, it kind of just set up the way the time is right for a show like this.”
Did Chris O’Donnell and LL Cool J ever dance with their daughters?
LL Cool J: “I actually did do the daddy-daughter dance with my youngest daughter at school. I did The Nutcracker and did the daddy-daughter dance at the party. So, for me it felt pretty fun. I felt absolutely ridiculous when I did The Nutcracker with my daughter, but I did it for her. So, I can relate to it to me personally. Chris O’Donnell: “It’s funny. LL’s got four kids. I have five. And his youngest and my oldest are the same age. They were at opposing schools, so, we were going through the daddy-daughter dances at the same time when we were starting our show, because they were a lot younger. You know, it’s what would you not do for your little daughter? I mean, honestly. And getting out there on the dance floor has never been my complete comfort zone.”
