During an appearance on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast, Lovato, 30, discussed the lyrics of the song while urging young girls to be wary of dating older men. “If you’re a young girl and you think that it’s sexy or fun to date older men, it’s not OK unless you’re of age,” she told Alex Cooper on the podcast episode that aired on Wednesday, August 24. “It’s portrayed as like, ‘Oh you scored someone older, that’s cool,’ and it’s like, actually, thats weird,” the Disney Channel alum continued, adding that the track serves as a “reflective” moment for her. The song, which includes the lyrics, “Finally twenty-nine/Funny just like you were at the time,” sparked rumors that Lovato was referencing Valderrama, now 42, who was 29 when they first met in 2010. Lovato, who wrote the song after turning 29 last year, also sings, “Seventeen would never cross my mind,” which doesn’t seem to be a coincidence, considering the actress was 17 when she first met Valderrama. “Thought it was a teenage dream, a fantasy/But it was yours, it wasn’t mine,” the lyrics continue. Lovato allegedly outed the That 70s Show actor further with the lines, “I see you’re quite the collector/Yeah, you’re twelve years her elder,” which is widely speculated to be about Valderrama’s relationship with his current wife, Amanda Pacheco, who is 12 years younger than him. Despite the circulating rumors, Lovato has not been compelled to confirm if the song is actually about Valderrama, as she previously stated, “the song says it all,” per Page Six. Despite admitting that she had “a ton of anxiety” prior to releasing the single, the “SKIN OF MY TEETH” singer said it was important to put the truth out there. In her conversation with Cooper, Lovato reiterated the importance of her message, stating, “Sometimes the public needs the truth, and that’s why I decided to release [it]…I think the message is so important.” Lovato’s latest album, Holy Fvck, is out now.
