The singer’s “Dark Horse” lyrics referring to the notorious serial killer, Jeffrey Dahmer, are being brought to light after the recent release of the Netflix series, Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. The series follows the story of Dahmer—also known as the Milwaukee cannibal or the Milwaukee monster—who committed violent and cannibalistic acts against his victims between 1978 and 1991. Upon the release of the new series, Dahmer began trending on social media as users discussed his presence in pop culture, including Perry’s 2013 hit single. The lyrics in question aren’t actually sung by Perry; Juicy J, who is featured on the track, raps: “Uh, she’s a beast/I call her Karma (come back)/She eats your heart out like Jeffrey Dahmer.” Twitter ignited with many calling the line in the song “disrespectful” and sickening. One user wrote, “It still upsets me when I hear the line in the song Dark Horse ‘She eats your heart out like Jeffrey Dahmer’ and I always make my daughter turn the station. It’s so disrespectful to the victims families. I hope people remember them while watching Netflix. Sorry for their losses.“Another Twitter user noted that the lyric makes them sick to their stomach. Perry isn’t the only artist to name drop the serial killer in her music. One fan pointed out that Kesha has also referenced Dahmer in her song “Cannibal.” Other artists have also mentioned Dahmer in their music including Eminem, Marilyn Mason, and Nicki Minaj. Another fan noted that Netflix is also to blame for glamorizing Dahmer’s violent crimes, adding, “If they won’t let juicy j’s verse on katy perry’s dark horse play on the radio then they shouldn’t make any more shows or movies about jeffrey dahmer.” Perry has not responded to the backlash surrounding the lyric as of writing.
