“He’s still got some loose ends with people around the firehouse and people to check in with,” co-showrunner Andrea Newman told Parade.com. “There’s lots for him to do there. There are some great moments for him there.” Casey is, needless to say, returning to Chicago with girlfriend Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer), who has spent the last three weeks with him in Portland, where he is taking care of the sons of a firefighter buddy of his who died in the pilot episode. “They have just spent three weeks together and now they’re coming back for this wedding, but they’re having to say goodbye again because they don’t live in the same place,” Newman said when asked how their relationship was progressing. “When you go to a wedding, your own relationship always comes under a spotlight, so they’re there at the wedding, which is going to have plenty of surprises, and their relationship is at a strange midway point right now. Having to say goodbye, having had this blissful time together, and having to have questions about their future.” It turns out that Casey isn’t the only familiar face to return to Chicago Fire for Severide’s wedding. The other person definitely won’t be Casey’s ex-wife Gabriela Dawson (Monica Raymund), but that is all showrunner Derek Haas would reveal. “I don’t want to spoil it,” he simply said. But he did add that in true Chicago Fire tradition, the wedding doesn’t go off without a hitch. “We make it so that the wedding doesn’t happen when it was planned,” Haas confirmed. “Whatever plans they might have had for a future wedding all gets pulled up.” “We’re not saying it’s not going to happen,” added Newman, who wrote the episode. “There’s plenty of wrenches that are thrown at it that make them have to adapt and twist and turn and figure out if they’re going to be able to pull it off at all.” Sadly, Haas also confirmed that Spencer’s return is solely for the finale, but, on a happier note, he added that if at some future date, the Aussie actor decides he would like to revisit the role on a more permanent basis, they are up for that. “We’re very good at adapting to whatever circumstances befall our schedule, cast, crew,” Haas said. “We have the best crew in the business, the writing staff has been incredible. We’ve had curveballs thrown at us for 10 seasons that couldn’t have been planned at the beginning of a season. So, all I will say is, ‘Give us that problem!’” While Casey will not be returning until the May 25 episode of Chicago Fire, the series returns to NBC with all new episodes on May 11, and Haas said they are worth watching, especially thanks to a really interesting character. “Emma Jacobs (Caitlin Carver), the paramedic who joined the firehouse while Sylvie was gone, seems to be up to something that I don’t like or appreciate, and that might also factor into our finale,” he said. Viewers, of course, know that Emma is trying to make 51 her permanent home, and she is not opposed to employing some underhanded methods, like making Violet (Hanako Greensmith) look incompetent, to achieve her goal. What Emma doesn’t realize is not only is Violet on to her, but she has support from Blake Gallo (Alberto Rosende) and Darren Ritter (Daniel Kyri), who checked Emma out and discovered she lied when she said she attended Johns Hopkins. When asked to go into more detail about to expect from Emma, all Haas would say is, “I mean, I wouldn’t trust her.” Chicago Fire will return with new episodes on May 11 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
