The 43-year-old has never publicly revealed the paternity of her daughter Katherine, 4, and son Spencer, 23 months, and her tight-knit relationship with Novak has led many of her fans to wonder if he is their biological father. Despite calling off their romantic relationship many moons ago, Kaling and Novak have remained close friends, fueling the rumors. But it’s also why she told Marie Claire that the speculation over Novak fathering her kids “doesn’t bother me.” “He’s the godparent to both of my kids—and they have such a great relationship—and so far [the rumors haven’t] affected my happiness at all, it hasn’t affected my kids or BJ,” she explained in the interview. “If that’s what is going to be titillating to people, I’ll take it.” While The Mindy Project star has tried to keep her kids’ lives private, she is not opposed to opening up about her conception stories somewhere down the road when her children are older. “I want them to be old enough to talk to me about it and [tell me] how they want me to talk about it,” she told the publication. “I’m the only parent my kids have…I think I err on the side of super cautious so that there’s less things that they can potentially be mad at me about down the line.” As for her decision to become a single parent, Kaling couldn’t be more content with her choice, saying, “The choice to have a child—by yourself, on your own terms—it was the best part of my life… It’s the thing that I hope women feel confident doing by themselves.” Kaling works as a writer, producer, and director in addition to acting, and she is currently co-writing the third movie in the beloved Legally Blonde film series.
