While critics are on the fence about Moonshot—some appreciated its inherent entertaining qualities and called out Condor’s performance as a high point, while others dinged the movie as “monotonous,” and “lacking an imagination"—fans have received the movie with open arms; it was the most-watched straight-to-streaming film during its first week of its release. So naturally, everyone is wondering: Will we get be a sequel? Here’s everything to know about whether there’ll be a Moonshot 2!
Will there be a Moonshot2?
So far, HBO Max hasn’t announced plans for a sequel to the successful rom-com. However, according to Deadline,Moonshot was produced as part of a four-film package with Berlanti/Schechter Films and HBO Max, meaning that if the right team gets behind the project, they may greenlight a sequel. Both Sprouse and Condor, as well as the Moonshot producing team, have remained quiet about their plans for a future film, but the cast schedules may pose a threat for any projects to move forward. Condor in particular is booked and busy for the foreseeable future as she stars alongside Will Forte and John Cena in Coyote Vs. Acme and headlines the upcoming miniseries Boo, Bitch. But if a sequel is a go, viewers already have some ideas about what the plot of Moonshot 2 might entail. CBR.com theorized that a sequel could dive into Walt and Sophie’s relationship (they’ve only known each other for 35 days, after all, so “a Moonshot sequel can dissect how genuine their love is,” Matadeen says), their budding careers, the exes that they leave behind in Mars (treading the “typical rom-com angle of a love triangle”), or even Braff’s space cowboy billionaire as he chases more corporate greed.
What happens in the Moonshot ending?
When Walt and Sophie finally arrive on Mars, they are reunited with their original love interests, but something immediately feels off. It becomes clear that Sophie’s boyfriend Calvin (Mason Gooding) is prioritizing his career goals over her, while Ginny (Emily Rudd) tells Walt that she met someone else during their time apart. Simultaneously, Walt meets with Leon, who plans to manipulate Walt’s journey to Mars for his own personal gain. All of this turmoil has left a bad taste in Walt’s mouth and he decides to return to Earth. Sophie realizes the same thing about her relationship with Calvin, and when the two reunite on the shuttle, they share a tender kiss.
Who might return for the Moonshot 2 cast?
Condor and Sprouse have stayed mum about returning to this world, but given that the first film ends with their reunion and kiss aboard an Earth-bound shuttle, there are opportunities to explore their budding romance in future films. And as mentioned above, Gooding, Rudd, and Braff could all be in the running for storylines in a sequel. Aside from Condor’s upcoming commitments, Sprouse is also tied to potential future seasons of Riverdale as well as a dramatic film in pre-production titled Undercover where he’ll star alongside Zachary Levi. Braff has also been announced for the upcoming film Tiburon, while both Gooding and Rudd are lined up for a few short films, features, and TV series.
