Before they got into the bit and invited their Only Murders in the Building co-star, Selena Gomez, to join them, the comedic pair recounted their past experiences hosting the late-night show. This past Dec. 10 episode marked Martin’s 16th go at hosting SNL and Short’s third. After flipping through old photos of Martin’s previous gigs as SNL host, Short, ready to prove he’s just as capable as his counterpart, quipped, “You see, we are like Harry and Meghan. No one’s rooting for us, but you’ll tune in to watch anyway,” a reference to Netflix’s new docuseries from the couple. The former Father of the Bride star, 77, quickly shot back, “For me, working with Marty Short is like World Cup soccer–somehow, I just can’t get into it.” But it wasn’t all hostility on stage. The two actors reminded fans that they’ve been busy working on Season 3 of the Hulu hit, and Short, 72, packed his punches up with a sentimental reminder to Steve, “I adore working with you; I hope we can do this forever.” “Well, you realize I’ve thought about that, and you’re not going to live forever, and that is sad because you’re not going to be able to hear the wonderful things I’m going to say at your memorial. So, I thought, ‘why wait?’ I wrote up your eulogy so you can hear it now,” Martin playfully responded before Short surprised the audience with the admission that he had also done the same. Before they began eulogizing one another, Martin asked the band to “play something sad” for this “sad moment.” But it wasn’t good enough for short, who then asked the band to play “something sadder.” After agreeing on a solemn tune, Martin began his eulogy by joking that there “wasn’t much of a turnout” and that Short’s last words would forever haunt him, “Tesla Autopilot, engage!” “I know Steve is looking down on us because he always looked down on everybody," Short joked. “I learned so much from Steve,” he added. “For example, he taught me that you don’t need to restrict the urinal to just number one.” The two continued to roast each other up until the closing second of their segment. “Even at the end, Marty had a wonderful girlfriend; smart, beautiful, and so realistic,” Martin said. “He was always sexually active—as long as there were batteries in the house. He was taken away from us too soon, but sadly, not before he played Jack Frost in Santa Clause 3.” “Oh, Steve!” Short bellowed, “It’s so hard to look at you in that open casket; motionless, colorless, stiff–so lifelike!” “Now that Marty’s gone, who will I ever work with?” Martin questioned. “What about me?!” shouted Gomez, 30, as she entered from stage right.
