“We’ve just begun talking about that. So we haven’t nailed anything down. But I mean they are technically a family member, so we’ll definitely have to find something special for them,” Lautner, who partnered with Hill’s Pet Nutrition to promote NBC’s Clear the Shelters campaign, told Parade.com. However, seeing Remi and Lily walk down the aisle in flower girl outfits could potentially trigger tears for the proud dog dad. “We do have a tendency to dress them up, yeah, for no occasion. We just love seeing them in their pretty little dresses. I probably wouldn’t be able to hold back crying if I saw that,” Lautner confessed. The actor proposed to Dome, a registered nurse, in November 2021. Lautner and his fiancée have since been taking the time to enjoy their engagement, and have not yet set a wedding date. “We are still just like soaking up the engagement time. We only get to enjoy that, you know, that little process once of calling each other fiancés,” Lautner shared. While he and Dome are “taking it day by day,” The Ridiculous 6 star revealed that they are “starting the process”—and he’s involved in the wedding planning! “I would say I’m more involved I think than most, but me and Tay, just one of the things we love doing the most is like throwing parties and hosting people,” Lautner said. “I love doing that already, so I mean a wedding is like the biggest scale of that. So yeah, I’m super excited to be involved in it.” As for whether there is one thing he’d love to see at the wedding, Lautner got sentimental. “As long as our loved ones, our family and friends are there and as long as my bride shows up, I think that’s a win for me.” Continue reading to find out what Taylor Lautner told Parade.com about adopting Remi, plus whether he’s watched the Twilight films with his fiancée, who is a former “die-hard Team Edward” fan!
How did you get involved with Hill’s Pet Nutrition and the Clear the Shelters Campaign?
It just was such a natural fit because it’s something that both me and my fiancée are so passionate about. When I met Tay, my fiancée, she already had a dog named Lily, who she rescued. Lily instantly became my best friend. We had Lily for a few years, and then about this time last year, Tay brought up the whole “I think Lily could use a sibling” thing, [saying] “It would make her really happy.” And I was like, “Really? Maybe she’d be happier as an only child.” And she was like, “No, no, she would love a sibling.” She started sending me pictures of puppies at local shelters … And then she sent a photo of Remi and my heart sunk for her and hearing her story of her and her seven siblings and their mom being abandoned in a field when they were puppies. I was just like, “Yeah, we need to go get her right now.” So we rescued Remi this time last year and the two of them together have just completely changed our lives, and that’s why I’m teaming up with Hill’s Pet Nutrition supporting NBCUniversal Local’s Clear the Shelters campaign this month, which I’m just super passionate about.
Was Remi your first rescue?
Yeah, Remi’s technically my first rescue. Lily would have been Tay’s. But I just got to jump into that. But Remi is my personal first rescue.
What advice would you give to individuals who are looking to adopt a dog?
I would just say now more than ever, you know, animals at our local shelters could use the adopting because over the last five months of this year there are more animals coming in—a lot more coming in than going out. I would just say from my personal experience, Remi and Lily have changed my life so much for the better. I don’t know what I would do without them, and if anybody out there feels like they’re ready to be a pet parent, I’d say go look at your local shelters. Find somebody that’s gonna become a family member, just like Remi and Lily did ours. If you want to make it really simple, just go to HillsClearTheShelters.com because they have tons of info and tools that you need to make sure you find the perfect pet.
What’s the most rewarding part about being a pet parent for you?
I feel like you hear this with everybody that does adopt, but it’s so true—it’s like Remi is the happiest dog in the world, and you just like can sense how thankful they are. That for me is by far the most rewarding part, just feeling from her how much she loves us and how much she loves this life. And honestly, it makes me want to live more like that.
I saw your fiancée Taylor’s video of her childhood crush, which was hilarious. What was your reaction when you saw that?
I loved it. I loved it cause it’s just such a funny thing because it’s true. She didn’t do it for the video. She was—was!—die-hard Team Edward. So yeah, I was like, “That sounds like an incredible video, you should definitely do that.” Yeah, the reaction from people was great, but I am happy to say that I have converted her. She’s come over to the dark side or the light side, whatever you want to say. I won in the end. Hallelujah!
Do you guys watch the Twilight movies together?
We’ve never like, sat down and watched them together. She was like a die-hard Twilight fan though … When they came out she went to all like the midnight premieres and stuff, and like did the whole like binge-watching the four before and then watching the new one, which is commitment. We’ve actually never sat down and watched them together. Maybe one day.
That’s so surprising! I feel like that would have been one of the first things for her to do: “We’ve got to sit down, you’ve got to give me all the secrets, behind-the-scenes stuff.”
I know. A funny story is though the only time, but we weren’t watching it together, I hadn’t seen any of the movies since they came out. So it had been like, what, 10 years? And she was working and we were staying in a hotel, and she came back from work and one of those channels [was] doing the whole marathon like where they just play all the movies back to back, and I had already watched New Moon and I think Eclipse was on, and I was just alone in bed watching it. She came back and she was like, “Um, what are you doing?” And I was like, “I haven’t seen these things in 10 years. This is kind of interesting, and they’re doing a marathon.” So that’s the only time I’ve seen them actually since they came out.
Wow. Maybe your next date night should be a Twilight movie marathon. That’d be pretty fun.
Maybe. I don’t know. I don’t want her checking out Edward.
Aside from the wedding, what else are you working on these days? Any projects that you can share with us?
I have a project that I am producing with my best friend Jason Kennedy that I don’t know if I can say too much about right now, but it’s definitely a passion project and something that hits close to home for me and him, so I’m super excited about that. And then we also just recently moved, and the wedding. So I would say between the move, the wedding and that, that’s definitely taken up a good portion of our time.
In the last couple of years, we’ve seen so many reboots and spin-offs. Is there one character you’ve played that you would love to revisit in the future?
Yeah, it’s probably an unexpected answer, but one that I’ve actually always died to bring back was I did a movie called The Ridiculous 6 with my buddy Adam Sandler and some other friends. I played a character in that called Lil Pete. And it was a very, very fun experience and a crazy character. That’s the one that always comes back to me that I’m like, “I would love to play Lil Pete again.” This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.
