“Microneedling with PRP (plasma-rich platelets), also known as the ‘Vampire Facial’, is a cosmetic treatment that stimulates collagen production and cell reproduction,” says Lucia Miranda, physician’s assistant at the Shafer Clinic in New York City.  Vampire facials get their name because, yes, it does involve blood. “A vampire facial is the nickname given to a cosmetic procedure that involves drawing blood from your arm, separating platelets, and applying them back onto your face with different modalities,” says Natalie Aguilar, dermatological nurse and celebrity aesthetician. Vampire facials are known for their rejuvenating skin benefits. Here’s everything you need to know about them.

How do vampire facials work?

“After drawing a small vial of blood, it’s placed into a machine called a centrifuge that spins your blood at such a fast velocity that your plasma separates from your red blood cells. Plasma looks like a clear, golden fluid, and golden it is!” says Aguilar.  From there, the PRP is put into the skin on the face. “Microneedling with PRP stimulates collagen and elastin production by using a pen-shaped device that causes slight injury to the skin that stimulates your body’s natural wound healing process,” says Miranda. “The addition of PRP from the blood is vital for healing wounds and injuries. The skin responds by making new collagen-rich tissue.” But don’t worry—it shouldn’t be too painful during or after. “Patients are numbed topically prior to the treatments and will feel pressure and friction from the small needles,” adds Miranda. “Recovery is fairly quick, but patients can experience tightness and tenderness after the treatment. The areas treated will have redness, and they could have some mild bruising.”

What are the benefits of vampire facials?

There are tons of benefits you can get from a vampire facial. “Microneedling with PRP help treat acne scars, surgical scars, wrinkles and fine lines, hyperpigmentation, sun damage, large pores and uneven skin texture,” says Miranda. And one of the biggest benefits of a vampire facial is that you use your body’s own natural elements. “Chances of having an allergic reaction to your own plasma is non-existent. It has also been said that using plasma for microneedling decreases healing time,” adds Aguilar. “Usually, skin is the most sensitive for 24-72 hours after microneedling. Those who needle with plasma have the least amount of sensitivity because there is no reaction to foreign body materials.”

Who is a good candidate for vampire facials?

“This treatment works better for people with darker skin tones because it doesn’t involve heat the way laser treatments do, which can affect your skin’s pigmentation or color,” says Miranda. There are also people who should take extra precautions. “Those with wound healing conditions, such as diabetes, should avoid the vampire facial; as well as those who are prone to Herpes Simplex Virus or cold sores around the mouth,” says Aguilar. “If one is prone to cold sores, your physician can prescribe an antiviral medication that can be started a few days prior to your procedure.”

What are the risks of vampire facials?

“Microneedling with PRP is usually safe, however, since it creates small holes in the surface of the skin, this can introduce bacteria and cause an infection if the patient does not follow the aftercare instructions provided to them,” says Miranda. Scarring is also a risk. “Scarring is a big risk with any treatment. However, with microneedling some technicians, and clients alike, have the ’the stronger the better’ motto. This is not the case,” says Aguilar. “The depth of needling varies according to the individual and their skin’s needs. Using a deep depth can scar skin.” Finally, another risk is cross-contamination. “There have been cases of HIV infection from microneedling with PRP and providers that did not follow proper hygienic protocols,” adds Aguilar. “It’s extremely important to stick with licensed individuals who have a reputable reputation.”

How long do results last?

You should see results relatively soon. “It can take between three and four weeks after microneedling with PRP treatments for patients to see visible results,” says Miranda. “Patients schedule follow-up treatments twice a year to maintain results.” You should also schedule your appointment with enough time to heal. “Healing is just as important as the treatment itself. You don’t want to receive this treatment prior to a busy schedule. You want to nourish and protect your skin for the few days that follow,” says Aguilar. “Continue drinking water and eating nutritious foods. This is not the time to hike or go to the beach. This is the time to rest, renew and care for yourself and your freshly-treated skin. " And for the best results, you shouldn’t schedule a vampire facial if you’re sick. “Because you are using your own platelets, you want to make sure you are healthy. It’s best not to come in when you are sick, recovering from an illness or hungover,” adds Aguilar. “Stick to a healthy diet full of antioxidants for at least 3 days prior to your service. Our skin relies on nutrients, vitamins, minerals and water for it to perform and look its best. So, it’s obvious that during treatment, especially one that involves our own blood, we want to load up on nutrient-dense foods, avoid fast or fried foods, and stay hydrated and well-supplemented.”

How much do vampire facials cost?

The price can really range for a vampire facial. “On the low end, vampire facials can cost $250 to the high end of $5,000. Depending on the individual and the client’s goals, between one and six sessions may be needed,” says Aguilar. “The time in between each session is also unique to the individual. PRP can be done for maintenance of the skin or correction of the skin; think acne scars.” Next up: Can Facial Yoga Make You Look Younger?
