In an Instagram post, Jack Wagner and co-stars Chris McNally and Kevin McGarry harmonize on an impromptu video singing, “that’s a wrap, that’s a wrap, that’s a wrap to season season 9 of When Calls the Heart.” For those unfamiliar with the series, When Calls the Heart follows the lives of folks in the small town of Hope Valley and more specifically, Elizabeth Thornton (Erin Krakow), a teacher in the town. Over the first eight seasons of the show, Elizabeth has fallen in love with and married a Mountie (Daniel Lissing), but soon became a widow after his untimely passing. She gives birth to their baby boy whom she names after her deceased husband, Jack. In the years following her husband’s death, Elizabeth adjusts to life as a single parent and is courted by two new suitors—businessman Lucas Bouchard (Chris McNally) and another Mountie, Nathan Grant (Kevin McGarry). In the season 8 finale, Elizabeth finally decided between the two men—a decision that continues to divide fans. The show’s ardent fans, known as Hearties, rally behind the show every chance they get. The show often trends on Twitter when new episodes air and there’s even a fan convention, known as the Hearties Family Reunion, which typically takes place in Vancouver each summer when the show is in production. The surge in coronavirus cases and Canada’s travel restrictions prevented conventions in 2020 or 2021, but we’re sure fans will be ready to gather again when things are safe to do so.

Look for the romance to continue between Elizabeth and her chosen suitor. The town’s mayoral race will likely figure prominently in the upcoming season as Lee Coulter (Kavan Smith), Fiona (Kayla Wallace), and even Mike Hickam (Ben Rosenbaum) look to stake their claim to the mayoral seat along with Bill Avery (Jack Wagner). Rosemary (Pascale Hutton) is leading the charge in reviving the town’s newspaper, The Valley Voice so look for some hijinks with her and her new position as editor-in-chief. Who’s in the cast for When Calls the Heart season 9?
With When Calls the Heart coming back in three short weeks, we finally have a little more news about the stars returning for season 9. Watch this space for updates on casting news.
Erin Krakow (Elizabeth Thatcher Thornton)
Elizabeth continues to navigate single parenthood to Toddler Jack (now played by Hyland Goodrich) after her husband’s tragic death. She has a published book under her belt and now that she has chosen to be with Lucas, we’ll see if their path together will be a smooth or rocky one. Follow Erin on Twitter and Instagram @erinkrakow.
Kevin McGarry (Nathan Grant)
Hope Valley’s Mountie, Nathan Grant has charge of his niece, Allie (Jaeda Lily Miller), who is a precocious tween ready to stir up trouble. Will he stick around after Elizabeth chose #TeamLucas in the season 8 finale? Follow Kevin on Twitter @kevin_mcgarry and on Instagram @kevin_mcgarry_w.
Chris McNally (Lucas Bouchard)
The saloon owner is a world traveler but seems to have a few secrets in his past. The businessman’s romantic gestures and candlelit dinner won over Elizabeth’s heart in the season 8 finale, but will his various business ventures pull him away from Elizabeth? You may recognize McNally from Altered Carbon or A Winter Princess. Follow Chris on Twitter @ChrisMcNally_ and on Instagram @chrismcnally.
Jack Wagner (Bill Avery)
A former lawman and forensic investigator, Avery is now a judge for the town of Hope Valley and is running for town mayor along with several others. In the beginning, Avery seemed to not always be on the right side of the law but has since mended his ways. Easily recognizable, Wagner has been on shows including MelrosePlace and General Hospital. Follow Jack on Twitter @jackwagnerhpk and on Instagram @jackwagnerofficial.
Amanda Wong (Mei Suo)
Look for a possible new love interest for Nathan with the addition of Amanda Wong. Follow Amanda on Twitter @amndawong.
Pascale Hutton and Kavan Smith (Rosemary and Lee Coulter)
Rosemary LeVeaux was at first hated by fans of the show when it appeared that she might be out to break Elizabeth and Jack apart, but after she fell in love and married Lee Coulter, fans were won over by her amusingly not-so-humble airs. The two actors have played nicely off each other over the seasons and have such great chemistry that they have starred in several Hallmark Channel movies together. Lee rode into town on a motorcycle and instantly took a shine to Rosemary and romanced her and eventually married her. The successful businessman is running for town mayor while his wife revived the town newspaper and is its editor, writer and publisher. Follow Kavan on Twitter @kavanjsmith and on Instagram @kavansmith and follow Pascale on Twitter @HuttonPascale and on Instagram @phutton.
Ben Rosenbaum (Mike Hickam)
Hickam is Hope Valley’s Everyman. He currently has a thing for Fiona (Kayla Wallace) though it’s unclear if the feeling is mutual or if he plans to do anything about it. He kind of bumbled his way around the first few seasons but now he’s proven himself to be a hard worker and businessman. He’s also running for town mayor. Follow Ben on Twitter @b3nros3 and on Instagram @ben_rosenbaum.
Hrothgar Matthews and Loretta Walsh (Ned and Florence Yost)
The two married last season having known each other for years. In the beginning of the show, Florence was left a widow (as were many others) after the mine collapsed. Matthews isn’t on social media, but you can follow Loretta Walsh on Twitter and Instagram @loretta_walsh.
Kayla Wallace (Fiona Miller)
Fiona came to town with the telephone company to help set up lines of communication in Hope Valley. After she was unceremoniously fired she decided to stay in town and bought out the local barbershop. Follow Kayla on Twitter and Instagram @IamKaylaWallace.
Andrea Brooks (Dr. Faith Carter)
With Dr. Shepherd off in Boston, Faith has taken over the infirmary and now serves as the town doctor. It’s unclear if Faith and Carson’s relationship will survive a long-distance romance so we’ll have to tune in this seasons to see! Follow Andrea on Twitter and Instagram @AndreaKBrooks.
Vienna Leacock, Viv Leacock, Natasha Burnett, Elias Leacock (The Canfields, from left, Angela, Joseph, Minnie, Cooper)
The Canfields came into town looking for a fresh start and bought an old property of Henry’s to lay down their roots. Their daughter, Angela, is a piano prodigy. She is also blind. Joseph, the Canfield patriarch was originally looking to buy the gas station in town, but he’s also a handyman. His wife, Minnie, works at Abigail’s cafe. Not only are Angela and Cooper siblings on the show, the two actors are real-life siblings and the children of Viv Leacock. Follow Viv on Twitter and Instagram @vivleacock. Follow Natasha on Twitter @natashaburnett and on Instagram @natasha.burnett. Follow siblings Vienna and Elias on Instagram @vienna.leacock and @eliasleonleacock, respectively.
Johannah Newmarch (Molly Sullivan)
Molly is one of the town’s widows whose husband died in the mine collapse in the first season of the show. She’s best friends with Florence and a bit of a gossip hound. Follow Johannah on Twitter @jonewmarch and on Instagram @johannahnewmarch.
Hyland Goodrich (Jack Thornton, Jr.)
Goodrich takes over as young Jack from Lincoln and Gunnar Taylor, the twins who were originally cast to play Baby Jack. The twins spent three seasons playing Elizabeth and Jack’s son. In an official statement on their Instagram account (run by the twin’s mother) they said, “Words out - Taylor twins have taken the year off of filming and even though we miss our WCTH family, we will never forget the three years we spent on set. We can not wait to see our new friend Hyland on the show and look forward to meeting him! This is not goodbye - it’s see you later ❤️”
Is Lori Loughlin returning to When Calls the Heart?
Oh, don’t we wish! There’s been no official news on whether Lori Loughlin will return to When Calls the Heart. Fans have been poring over each and every one of Erin Krakow’s Instagram posts looking for clues. We do know Lori Loughlin did return as Abigail Stanton in the Christmas episodes of When Hope Calls, the spinoff of When Calls the Heart that has now moved to its new home at GAC Family. Whether her character will remain in Brookfield when Season 2 eventually continues remains to be seen. Our #Henrigail dreams remained alive when we saw Abigail hand a letter to the postman with specific instructions that the letter had to get to its destination. Who was the letter addressed to? Why, Henry Gowen, of course!
Is there any cast leaving When Calls the Heart?
At the end of last season we saw Dr. Carson (Paul Greene) head east to take a fellowship at John Hopkins, Henry Gowen (Martin Cummins) head out of town to spend more time with his son, and Nathan Grant (Kevin McGarry) feeling the sting of rejection after Elizabeth chose Lucas over him. Will these three gents leave Hope Valley never to return? McGarry has been laying low and off social media since the season finale aired but he’s a fan favorite so expect him to return—and perhaps find love with someone else in Hope Valley! It was unclear if and when Dr. Carson would return from his fellowship in Baltimore. Guesses are he’ll return mid-season or near season’s end. Will he ride in like Faith did upon her return from Chicago? Greene recently did a live session on YouTube and Facebook and announced that he would be returning to When Calls the Heart. Whew! As for Henry, this Heartie is still shipping #Henrigail and based on Cummins’ recent Instagram post, Hearties will be relieved to know Henry will make his way back to Hope Valley once again.
Where is When Calls the Heart filmed?
WhenCallstheHeart is filmed just outside of Vancouver, British Columbia. The town of Hope Valley is located on the Jamestown Movie Set (built on the family-owned MacInnes Farm) where most of the show is filmed. Fun fact:The sets that have two levels (row house, guest rooms in the saloon, etc.) don’t actually have room upstairs to film so those spaces are created elsewhere.
What is the When Calls the Heart spinoff series?
The popular series has also spawned its own original spinoff, When Hope Calls which can be streamed on Hallmark Movies Now. The new series follows Lillian (Morgan Kohan) and Grace (Jocelyn Hudon), two sisters who were separated as children after the death of their parents. Lillian was adopted soon after they were orphaned while Grace remained in the foster care system until she aged out. The two reunite as adults and open an orphanage of their own. The spinoff series was recently revived for season 2 on GAC Family.
