It’s no surprise that fans want to learn every detail they can about When Calls the Heart, from where it’s filmed to who’s in the cast and much, much more. So without further ado, we’re answering your burning question:
Where is When Calls the Heart filmed?
The show is filmed in and around Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada.
Is there a real Hope Valley in Canada?
Kinda! The town of Hope Valley is a recreated village on the Jamestown movie set, which is located on MacInnes Farm, a working farm, about 45 minutes outside Vancouver area in Langley, British Columbia.
How did MacInnes Farm become movie set?
In the mid-2000s, when producers were scouting a location to film Scary Movie 4, they spotted the beautiful grove of cottonwood trees and thought they would be perfect for recreating scenes in The Village, the movie being mocked in the horror parody. “They asked to build the temporary movie set. It was a total fluke. So that allowed my parents to keep going and we kept logging the cottonwood, we had horses, we did some breeding,” Melanie MacInnes told the local paper Langley Advance Times. “But the movies kept coming after that.”
What movies and TV series have been filmed at MacInnes Farm?
Scary Movie 4 was the first movie filmed at MacInnes farm. Riverdale, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Once Upon a Time, Timeless,Beyond Sherwood Forest and The Book of Beasts were also filmed there. At this point, When Calls the Heart is the primary occupant, but the family told Canada’s Super Channel that they’ve “had over 100 films in 10 years.”
Can I tour the When Calls the Heart set?
Normally, you can book tours of the farm but due to filming all tours have been suspended.
Are the buildings on the When Calls the Heart set real?
For the most part, yes!
Hope Valley has several two-story buildings. Do they film on all levels?
The sets that have two levels (row houses, guest rooms in the saloon, etc.) do not have room upstairs to film so those spaces are created elsewhere. Lee and Rosemary’s bedroom (which would be located on the second floor of their house) was actually built and filmed in the schoolhouse/church.
How many row houses are on the Jamestown set?
The houses that are the homes for Elizabeth as well as Lee and Rosemary sit behind the main Jamestown movie set. There are actually only two houses on the property. The row of houses you see when you’re watching When Calls the Heart is a bit of movie magic and created through special effects. The mountain range you see in the title card during the opening credits is also a special effect.
What’s the history of the MacInnes Farm
The MacInnes family has been farming the 100-acre MacInnes Farm for nearly 50 years. The elder MacInneses started a dairy farm and feedlot, but like many family farms, they struggled to make ends meet, according to Melanie MacInnes, whose aging parents own and still work the land. They sold their dairy cattle in 1991 and began to diversify by planting 36 acres of cottonwood trees to be used for toilet paper. But the Scott Paper mill that was supposed to buy the timber shut down just before their first harvest. That left them with the large stand of cottonwood trees that have become familiar to #Hearties. The MacInnes family then decided to return it to its roots and planted five acres of heritage apple trees and have since added six acres of hazelnuts plus, barley and hops.
What’s happening on the MacInnes Farm today?
In addition to their thriving movie business, the MacInnes Farm is very much a working farm. They are building a malting machine to process their homegrown barley on-site. You’ll also find 300 free-range chickens and 25 honey beehives. (Yes, visitors can buy farm-fresh eggs and honey!) Working in conjunction with The Honest Company, the farm is creating a conservation area that will educate the public about the importance of bees and other pollinators.
